If you are looking for an off-road vehicle, the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is hard to beat. The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro tries, but it can't come close to the Wrangler Unlimited's off-road heritage.
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited comes standard with a VVT Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission standard and a five-speed automatic optional on all models. With those mechanics, the Wrangler Unlimited can accelerate from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and earn up to 16 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway. The 4Runner TRD Pro comes with a 4.0-liter V6 with VVT that delivers 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. A manual transmission is not available for the 4Runner TRD Pro, making it slightly more difficult to maintain control over rough terrain without the ability to manually shift gears. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is more off-road worthy with its manual transmission option and more powerful than the Toyota 4Runner.
If you are ready to take your 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited off-roading, you probably want a 4x4 system that will help you climb steep inclines with ease and can adjust to inclement weather. On the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, there are two available 4-wheel-drive systems available - the standard Command-Trac Shift on the Fly part-time 4WD system and the Rock-Trac 4WD system that allows for more control and more torque at lower gears for rock crawling. By contrast, the 4Runner TRD Pro only has one 4x4 system, which is a standard part-time 4WD with Active Traction Control. The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is better prepared and can be better equipped for off-road adventures.
Right off the bat it's hard to ignore the massive price difference between the two off-road oriented sport utility vehicles. The 4Runner TRD Pro starts at $41,850 while the Wrangler Unlimited Sport is priced at $27,695. That's a savings of $14,155. The entry-level Wrangler Unlimited Sport still features the excellent Pentastar V6 that packs in 15 more horsepower than 4Runner TRD Pro's engine while achieving the same fuel economy on the highway (21 mpg). With the major price difference in these two models, you could get a fully-loaded Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Hard Rock (the top trim grade, starting at $41,795 MSRP) for just a few hundred more than the price of a standard 4Runner TRD Pro (not counting destination charges or taxes and fees).
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a tried and true off-road legend and it can drive circles around the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro.
