Driver Bo “Bandit” Darville (Burt Reynolds) agrees to make the ultimate beer-run from Texas to Georgia within 28 hours. When Bandit picks up hitchhiker Carrie (Sally Field), he attracts the attention of Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason). Angry that Carrie will not marry his son, Justice embarks on a high-speed chase after Bandit. The Blues Brothers (1980): This classic movie is both a road-trip movie, a comedy and a musical, starring the memorable comedy duo John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, who were former original performers from NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Also included in the lineup are some of America’s greatest music legends, like Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. After his prison release, Jake (John Belushi) reunites with his brother, Elwood (Dan Aykroyd). Together, they are known as the “Blues Brothers.” Jake and Elwood have to save the orphanage they grew up in by raising $5,000 to pay back taxes. It has it all, from hilarious hi-jinks and to a brilliant movie cast including the phenomenal Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo. Accompanied by their children, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), the Griswolds take a family road trip from Illinois to a California amusement park, dealing along the way with car problems and the death of a family member. From there, it’s madcap action until the credits roll, with some of the funniest scenes ever committed to film. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987): This gem is a American road buddy comedy film starring comedy icons Steve Martin and the late John Candy. Easily excitable, control-freak Neal Page (Steve Martin) tries to get home to Chicago for a cozy family Thanksgiving, but his flight gets rerouted to a remote city in Kansas because of a heavy snowstorm. Neal is eventually forced to bunk up with talkative travelling salesman Del Griffith (John Candy), whom he finds extremely annoying. Together they must overcome the tribulations of holiday travel to reach their intended destination and still have their sanity intact. The Great Outdoors (1988): Starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy, this comedy follows two families as they clash during a vacation in a lakeside resort. While not a road trip movie in the traditional sense of a long journey, their vacation antics and outdoor misadventures capture a similar spirit of family fun and chaos, making it a great pick for a lighthearted movie choice.
