With American vets clamoring for the rugged capability of the plucky little Jeeps they drove in the service, Original Jeep parent company Willys-Overland introduced the Jeep CJ, a civilian version of the Jeep. It was a stunning hit, and Willys-Overland soon followed up that success in 1947 with their second product: the rugged, no-nonsense Jeep 4×4 Truck. Available as either a pickup or 4×4 station wagon, the trucks would be produced almost unchanged for 20 years. 1957–1966: Jeep FC (Forward Control) Borrowing a flat-nosed, driver-forward look from the European Volkswagen van and truck, the Jeep FC trucks are still one of the oddest Jeep vehicles ever made, but proved very popular upon their debut in 1957. The short wheelbase, rugged components and surefooted Jeep capability made them prized by everyone from loggers to ranchers, who loved their robust 4×4 components and commanding view from the driver’s seat when crawling over rough terrain. Some versions even offered a power-take-off shaft to run farm implements that would normally be used with a tractor. 1963–1987: Jeep J-series Gladiator The longest-running Jeep pickup ever produced, the J-series was introduced in 1963 for those who wanted a truck with a little more luxury and more options than the plain Jane Jeep 4×4 Truck we previously introduced. Featuring virtually the same doors, cowl, hood and front sheetmetal as the first generation Jeep Cherokee wagons, the Jeep J-series is one of the coolest Jeep trucks ever built. Between 1967-1969, the model even went to war again as the Kaiser Jeep M715, which featured upgraded axles, military spec bumpers and a convertible top. The J-series was eventually the first Jeep given the “Gladiator” name that has now passed to the 2020 version. 1981–1985: Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler While the Jeep CJ models were always beloved for their off-road prowess, their ability to haul cargo left a lot to be desired. Jeep took a shot at improving upon that starting in 1981, with the longer-wheelbase Jeep CJ-8 Scambler. Featuring a five-foot pickup bed mated without a gap to the popular Jeep CJ, the model featured a rigid, lift-off half-cab and locking doors, but could also be purchased with a convertible soft top. While the bed didn’t make it a true pickup, it was a hit with those who needed more hauling capability from their Jeeps. Pristine examples are prized by collectors today. 1986–1992: Jeep Comanche With the Jeep J-Series truck getting seriously long in the tooth by the 1980s, Jeep knew it was time for a redesign of their truck offering. The result is the Jeep Comanche, which featured a real-deal seven-foot four-inch bed, making Jeep an immediate contender in the mid-size truck market. Built on either two or four wheel drive powertrains, the Jeep Comanche features sheet metal that’s identical to the popular Jeep Cherokee Sport from the front doors forward. With Jeep’s legendarily reliable and torquey 4.0-liter inline six cylinder under the hood, it was popular, but would be the last production Jeep truck for over 25 years when the final Comanche rolled off the line in 1992. 2005: Jeep Gladiator Concept Aftermarket companies — including Jeep performance parts supplier Mopar — jumped into the void left by the Jeep Comanche after 1992, issuing top kits that turned Jeeps into something like a truck but not quite. That was the news until 2005, when Jeep debuted the tantalizing 2005 Jeep Gladiator Concept at the Detroit Auto Show. Cribbing its design heavily from the Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Gladiator concept was definitely the shape of things to come (14 years later), with angular rear fenders, a side-mounted spare, an expandable truck bed, and the 2.8 liter diesel from a Jeep Liberty.

From crumbs to salt to greasy hands, food is messy stuff and every time you and your passengers chow down on the road, you’re risking a mustard splotch, gooey handprint or glob of ice cream on the upholstery, not to mention making the interior smell like a Burger King or worse. So do yourself a favor and take 30 minutes to stop, get out, and eat. You’ll thank yourself down the road, when your car doesn’t have a scent more befitting a garbage truck. . 4) I Will Regularly Get My Vehicle Washed and Waxed: Mother Nature is always trying to turn your beautiful car, truck, van or SUV into a filthy and rusted wreck. Don’t help her out! By getting your car’s exterior washed and waxed on a regular schedule, not only are you helping it look great, you’re washing off dirt, grime, grit, bug guts and plant sap that can permanently micro-scratch, etch or oxidize your car’s paint, chrome and alloy components if left to sit on the surface for too long. In addition, a nice coat of wax helps your car’s paint and trim more easily shed dirt, splattered bugs and even the occasional paint splash from road work. 5) I Will Rotate My Tires in Accordance With the Manufacturer’s Recommendations: While nobody wants to spend thirty minutes in the tire shop every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, if you want to make sure you get the most out of your very expensive tires, you have to rotate them regularly. Tires are much better than they were even a few decades ago, but they’re not magic. Rotating your tires in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations not only makes sure they wear evenly, it can also give your tire shop pros a chance to catch unseen sidewall damage that could lead to a catastrophic blowout on the freeway. That could save your life. 6) I Will Regularly Check My Oil: It’s foolhardy to drive your vehicle like the hood is welded shut and hope for the best. Unforeseen things can and do happen, and even a brand new car can have a situation where it’s leaking oil. Wait 5,000 miles until your next oil change with a pinhole leak that’s bad enough, and you’ll starve your engine for oil. That’s when things get expensive. Keep the gremlins at bay by remembering to check your oil every other time you fill up. If you don’t know how, check your owner’s manual. While there’s every chance in the world your oil level will be right on the money, checking is free insurance against the curve balls life can throw at your engine, allowing you to catch problems while they’re still minor and can be easily fixed. 7) I Will Buy A Tire Pressure Gauge and Learn To Use It: Again, tire technology these days is light years beyond where it was just a few years back, but in order to function properly and safety, your tires must be properly inflated. Though many newer cars have a low tire pressure warning light, at that point you have to figure out which tire is the culprit. That’s where an accurate tire gauge comes in. Tire pressure fluctuates throughout the year based on the temperature outside and how much driving you’re doing. If your tires are over- or under-inflated, it can severely compromise the mileage you can expect to get out of them and potentially even put your safety at risk. So buy a tire pressure gauge and learn to use it. It’s easy! Whether you choose an analogue or digital pressure gauge, they’re cheap, and checking tire pressure literally takes seconds. The 2019 Ram 1500 is winning awards one right after the other for its groundbreaking styling, comfort, engineering and performance, and they just chalked up another big one with the news that influential automotive publication WardsAuto has including the 2019 Ram 1500’s standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque to their Top 10 Engines of 2019 list! It’s the ninth consecutive year that an engine produced for a Chrysler Dodge Jeep or Ram vehicle has been included on the prestigious list. This marks the 25th year of the Top 10 Engines list for Wards, which has been reviewing and critiquing automobile design and engineering for over 100 years. Editors with Wards Auto chose the winners after evaluating more than 30 engines and hybrid powertrain systems through extensive real-world road testing. While noting that the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 has been used in CDJR vehicles for nearly a decade, WardsAuto editors lauded the addition of the groundbreaking eTorque mild-hybrid system as a “marvelous innovation” that “ provides efficient power boost at launch and improves fuel economy” while working seamlessly to get the 2019 Ram 1500 moving from a standing stop. “eTorque shows its stuff in various ways, including putting the fullsize truck in motion,” said Drew Winter, senior content director at WardsAuto. “Typically, moving automotive mass from a standstill gobbles up fuel. But that’s mitigated by a dollop of electrical propulsion. The result: Our judges saw up to 22 mpg during more than 500 miles of testing. That’s outstanding for a 2½-ton truck with 4-wheel-drive that never feels underpowered. eTorque makes the vehicle’s fuel-saving stop-start system work almost imperceptibly. It’s one of the best around.” Introduced in the 2019 Ram 1500, the eTorque system — which is also available on the 5.7-liter Hemi — compensates for the dip in low-end torque while towing by replacing the alternator with a small, liquid-cooled electric generator that constantly feeds power to a suitcase-sized, 48-volt battery pack hidden in the rear of the cab. When the system senses a need for low-end torque when towing a heavy load, hillclimbing or taking off from a standing stop, the generator instantly switches to become a powerful electric motor, drawing energy from the battery pack and transmitting torque directly to the crankshaft via the same eight-rib, heavy-duty drive belt used for charging. In 2019 Ram models equipped with eTorque, the system delivers up to 90 ft.-lbs of torque to the crankshaft. On 2019 Ram models equipped with the legendary 5.7-liter Hemi V8, the torque gains from eTorque are even more substantial, with up to 130 lb.-ft of added grunt. The system is also used by the 2019 Ram 1500’s fuel-saving start/stop system to restart the 2019 Ram 1500 almost instantaneously after the engine shuts down at stoplights. Designed for the heavy-duty performance demanded by truck owners, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 in the 2019 Ram 1500 is made of high-strength t380 aluminum alloy, with cast iron cylinder bore liners. In the low end, six-bolt crankshaft bearing caps create an extremely robust bottom end, while cast aluminum pistons treated with friction reducing coating and drive-forged connecting rods fight heat and provide even more strength. Up top, dual overhead camshafts and four-valve per cylinder heads with integrated exhaust manifolds allow the 2019 Ram 1500 to breath deep. “The versatility of our workhorse Pentastar V-6 engine family is unquestioned, with more than 9 million produced,” said Ram’s head of powertrain engineering, Bob Lee. “The new eTorque mild-hybrid system receiving the Wards 10 Best recognition validates our mission to provide customers optimal ownership value without sacrificing performance.” It’s one more way that the 2019 Ram 1500 is getting noticed, convincing the critics, and changing the truck game as we know it. In the history of racing, few engines have attained the legendary status of the 426 cubic inch Hemi V8. Produced in vanishingly small quantities, with a valve train that even Dodge techs found complicated to work on and keep adjusted properly back in the day, the 426 Hemi was nonetheless embraced almost immediately by performance enthusiasts who wanted to go fast. Thanks to its large displacement and high horsepower, the engine earned the nickname “The Elephant” soon after it was introduced as a super-high output racing engine in 1965, and later slightly detuned for street cars like legendary Hemi Barracudas, Chargers, Coronets and Road Runners. With all things muscle car back in vogue, Mopar Performance has managed to one-up even the mighty 426 Hemi engines of the 1960s and early 70’s with the “Hellephant,” a new 426 Hemi crate engine that uses the latest in materials, fuel management, supercharging and engineering techniques to produce an astounding 1,000 horsepower and 950 lb.-ft. of torque on regular pump gasoline, straight out of the box. Introduced at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas, the Hellephant is the highest horsepower crate engine ever offered by an original equipment manufacturer, and will drop directly into many original Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler muscle cars and truck with the help of a Hellephant installation kit. The engine assembly includes a flywheel, front-sump oil pan, throttle body, fuel injectors, water pump and coil packs. The engine achieves that astounding four-digit horsepower number thanks in part to increased displacement, with a 4-inch stroke and 4.125-inch cylinder bore in an all-aluminum block to keep weight low, plus a special high-lift valve train and custom forged pistons. Capping the engine is an improved, high output supercharger. The “Hell” in the “Hellephant” name is a nod to many of the performance mods used in the engine being perfected through the incredible Dodge Demon and Hellcat Challenger models of recent years. A 707-horsepower “Hellcrate” Hemi was introduced at last year’s SEMA show. Showcasing the new Hellephant crate engine at SEMA was a special custom car build: a 1968 Dodge Charger named the SuperCharger, which Dodge had on display as well. Featuring the Hellephant engine backed by a T-6060 six speed manual transmission from a Challenger Hellcat, widebody Challenger SRT Demon-style fender flares, a Hellcat-style hood scoop, and a host of custom car tricks on virtually every part and panel, the metallic gray old school muscle car was a big hit at SEMA, mobbed by fans for the entire show. “Our enthusiasts crave power and performance and our new ‘Hellephant’ Mopar Crate HEMI engine and kit deliver huge horsepower and torque in a plug-and-play package that is unique in the industry,” said Steve Beahm, Head of Parts & Service for Dodge parent company FCA North America. “The 1968 Dodge Charger is one of the hottest classic cars, which is why we decided to use it as a starting point for the ‘Super Charger’ Concept. Fiat-Chrysler, the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat, announced earlier this week that they plan to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the popular Jeep Renegade in early 2020. It comes on the heels of last year’s announcement that the company will also offer a plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler for the first time in 2020 as well. Unlike battery-only cars like the Tesla, plug-in hybrid vehicles have both a battery pack and a gasoline engine that work in tandem to extend mileage, with power provided by either the battery, gasoline or both simultaneously. The Renegade announcement is the next step in the company’s turn toward electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids spelled out in the new five-year plan released earlier this year, with FCA saying it would invest $10.4 billion in electric and hybrid technology, and offer up to 30 different vehicles with the option of electric powertrains by 2022. The plans for Jeep call for 10 plug-in hybrid models and four fully electric models within five years. Currently, the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica is the only CDJR vehicle available with a plug-in hybrid system. The first hybrid minivan in the world, the system allows a 2019 Pacifica hybrid to achieve fuel mileage of over 84 miles per gallon, or run on battery only for more than 30 miles. The 2019 Ram 1500 also has a so-called “mild hybrid” system called eTorque, which uses a generator on the engine to send excess power to a suitcase-sized battery pack mounted in the rear wall of the cab. When the system senses a need for more torque while towing or hauling, the generator instantly switches to a powerful electric motor, sending up to 130 ft-lbs. of additional grunt directly to the crankshaft through the same high-strength belt used to turn the generator. The plug-in hybrid 2020 Renegade will be built at the FCA plant in Melfi, Italy, which currently produces all Renegade models for both North America and the rest of the world. Since the Renegade was introduced in 2014, over 742,000 examples have been built there. FCA has dedicated a $230 million investment in the Melfi factory to gear up for the production of electric and hybrid powertrains. The 2019 Renegade received a major update and redesign for the new model year, in addition to a new 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood, jointing the 2.4 liter four-cylinder. The 1.3-liter turbo four is expected to be the gasoline component of the 2020 Renegade’s new PHEV system. Jeep has not announced where they plan to sell the new plug-in hybrid Renegade, or what can of mileage and range we can expect when it does debut, but with America gone big on electric and hybrid vehicles of late, it’s a good bet we’ll see it in the United States.
