2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Rating

Ram begins 2021 in stride with the addition of another wonderful accolade: the new 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab has been chosen as a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick. The Ram 1500 is the first and the only pickup to earn Top Safety Pick rating under new, more stringent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing. The 2021 Ram Crew Cab achieved the highest possible ratings in each of six IIHS crashworthiness tests.

PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS: In 2020, the Institute for Highway Safety modified their testing procedures to be more rigorous and this included integrating more safety requirements to be met by the vehicle manufacturers with their products. One of the additional requirements is the vehicle must include a Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking system. Ram met the requirements with its technology, achieving an “advanced” rating, built on the Ram 1500 Crew Cab’s sensor-fusion Automatic Emergency Braking system. Also, the rating applies to the Crew Cab’s adaptive LED projector headlamps with high-beam assist. It marks the first such achievement by a pickup truck under IIHS’s new testing regiment.

SENSOR-FUSION: So how does such an advanced safety system work? It’s all about cameras and radar. Sensor-fusion combines camera technology with radar sensors to help determine if a frontal impact with another vehicle appears imminent. The driver will be alerted if such is detected. If the driver does not respond to the alerts, the system deploys the vehicle’s brakes to help avoid impact or to reduce it. To incorporate Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking, the range of the system’s radar technology is modified to help identify pedestrians.
