Kings River Falls
Near Boston, Arkansas

Though it’s only about 50 miles long from source to end, the Kings River in Madison and Carroll counties is one of the great natural jewels of northwest Arkansas. Fed by pentiful springs in the area, the Kings River includes one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state, the graceful, multi-spouted Kings River Falls near Boston. The river and land around the falls is so lovely that back in 1971, it was declared it the Kings River Falls Nature Area to protect the spot. It’s a great place to swim, contemplate, or just drink in the beauty of Northwest Arkansas.

Buffalo National River

A favorite for summertime camping, hiking, swimming and canoeing, the pristine beauty of the Buffalo River was so legendary that a plan to damn it to create a reservoir and lake in the 1960s was met with public resistance so fierce that it led to its designation as the Buffalo National River in 1972. America’s first National River, the Buffalo flows freely its entire length, making it one of only a handful of unobstructed rivers still remaining in the continental U.S. The crystal clear, spring fed river has something for every kind of nature lover, from giant limestone bluffs, to rapids, to gravel beaches, to deep, calm swimming holes.

Hawksbill Crag, A.K.A. Whitaker Point
Near Ponca, Arkansas

Offering one of the most spectacular vistas in all of Northwest Arkansas, Whitaker Point, also known as Hawksbill Crag, is a single limestone point that juts majestically out over the abyss near Ponca, with a drop of hundreds of feet to the valley below. It’s understandably a favorite for romantic kisses and wedding proposals, especially during the spectacular sunsets available to the west and during the fall colors. Be careful, though: when you’re on the point there’s literally nothing that stands between you and a Wile E. Coyote splat other than thin air.

The natural bridge at Alum Cove Geologic Area
Near Jasper, Arkansas

There are several “natural bridges” in Arkansas: rock formations that, through wind, rain and natural weathering over millions of years, have become natural arches. One of the most spectacular natural bridges in the state can be found at Alum Cove Geologic Area near Jasper. Once a quartz sandstone cave, at some point over the eons, the roof of the cave collapsed, leaving the massive opening arch, which is 130 feet long and 20 feet wide, There are guardrails along the edges of the natural bridge at Alum Cove, so visitors can actually walk across it safely. From the highway, you’ve got to hike an easy trail for about a half-mile to view the arch, so bring your hiking boots.

Beckham Creek Cave Lodge
Near Parthenon, Arkansas

Let’s call this a natural wonder thanks to a collaboration between man and Mother Nature. Built in 1984 inside a naturally occurring limestone cave as a shelter against an apocalypse Celestial Seasonings Tea Company millionaire John Hays felt was sure to come, the Beckham Creek Cave Lodge is the only space inside a cave in Arkansas that’s available for rent by the night. This is not “Flintstones” cave, either, luxury accommodations include an upper level sitting room, a fully stocked kitchen, Jacuzzi tub and a heliport. Break your piggybank, though: rates start at $1,200 per night.
