WardsAuto names ‘19 Ram 1500’s V6 with eTorque to their Top 10 Engines of 2019 list! | McLarty Daniel CDJR of Bentonville

The 2019 Ram 1500 is winning awards one right after the other for its groundbreaking styling, comfort, engineering and performance, and they just chalked up another big one with the news that influential automotive publication WardsAuto has including the 2019 Ram 1500’s standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque to their Top 10 Engines of 2019 list! It’s the ninth consecutive year that an engine produced for a Chrysler Dodge Jeep or Ram vehicle has been included on the prestigious list.

This marks the 25th year of the Top 10 Engines list for Wards, which has been reviewing and critiquing automobile design and engineering for over 100 years. Editors with Wards Auto chose the winners after evaluating more than 30 engines and hybrid powertrain systems through extensive real-world road testing. While noting that the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 has been used in CDJR vehicles for nearly a decade, WardsAuto editors lauded the addition of the groundbreaking eTorque mild-hybrid system as a “marvelous innovation” that “ provides efficient power boost at launch and improves fuel economy” while working seamlessly to get the 2019 Ram 1500 moving from a standing stop.

“eTorque shows its stuff in various ways, including putting the fullsize truck in motion,” said Drew Winter, senior content director at WardsAuto. “Typically, moving automotive mass from a standstill gobbles up fuel. But that’s mitigated by a dollop of electrical propulsion. The result: Our judges saw up to 22 mpg during more than 500 miles of testing. That’s outstanding for a 2½-ton truck with 4-wheel-drive that never feels underpowered. eTorque makes the vehicle’s fuel-saving stop-start system work almost imperceptibly. It’s one of the best around.”

Introduced in the 2019 Ram 1500, the eTorque system — which is also available on the 5.7-liter Hemi — compensates for the dip in low-end torque while towing by replacing the alternator with a small, liquid-cooled electric generator that constantly feeds power to a suitcase-sized, 48-volt battery pack hidden in the rear of the cab. When the system senses a need for low-end torque when towing a heavy load, hillclimbing or taking off from a standing stop, the generator instantly switches to become a powerful electric motor, drawing energy from the battery pack and transmitting torque directly to the crankshaft via the same eight-rib, heavy-duty drive belt used for charging.

In 2019 Ram models equipped with eTorque, the system delivers up to 90 ft.-lbs of torque to the crankshaft. On 2019 Ram models equipped with the legendary 5.7-liter Hemi V8, the torque gains from eTorque are even more substantial, with up to 130 lb.-ft of added grunt. The system is also used by the 2019 Ram 1500’s fuel-saving start/stop system to restart the 2019 Ram 1500 almost instantaneously after the engine shuts down at stoplights.

Designed for the heavy-duty performance demanded by truck owners, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 in the 2019 Ram 1500 is made of high-strength t380 aluminum alloy, with cast iron cylinder bore liners. In the low end, six-bolt crankshaft bearing caps create an extremely robust bottom end, while cast aluminum pistons treated with friction reducing coating and drive-forged connecting rods fight heat and provide even more strength. Up top, dual overhead camshafts and four-valve per cylinder heads with integrated exhaust manifolds allow the 2019 Ram 1500 to breath deep.
