Willys-Overland TruckProduced: 1947-1965

The old Jeep pickup truck that started it all, the Willys-Overland Truck borrowed much of its styling from the Willys station wagon, including the doors, fenders, grille, bumpers and hood.

Marketed as “The Jeep Truck” in advertising to win over World War II vets who drove flat-fender Jeeps in the war, it was one of the first commercially-available 4×4 half-ton trucks, beating Ford and Chevy to factory four-wheel-drive in their light-duty trucks by a full decade. 

Around 200,000 Willys-Overland trucks were produced during the 18-year production run.

SPOT IT: 

• Vertically-slotted grille, with a pronounced peak in the middle
• Two rounded rectangular indents in each door
• Round, chrome-rimmed headlights with amber parking lights
• Side-mounted spare carrier on the driver’s side 
• Angular, flat-sided front and rear fenders 
• Pre-1961 models have a two-piece windshield with a vertical bar in the center, while those produced later have a one-piece windshield.

Jeep FC-150Produced: 1957-1965

Maybe the weirdest old Jeep truck you’ll ever encounter, the 1957-1965 Jeep FC-150 “Forward Control” is also the rarest. Built on the same short-wheelbase chassis as the Jeep CJ-5, the Jeep FC-150 featured a funky, flat-nosed design that might bring to mind a VW van rather than a Jeep.  

With the driver sitting directly over the front axle, the Jeep FC-150 was too quirky for most buyers. However, it was a big hit with farmers, ranchers, loggers and construction firms, who liked its 6.5-foot bed, go-anywhere 4×4 capability, maneuverability and tight turning radius. 

Arkansas Adventures in Your Jeep Gladiator

Though demand started strong with 10,000 sold in 1957, sales of the Jeep FC-150 and heavy-duty variants like the FC-170 and FC-190 fell steadily after the first year. Just under 30,000 Jeep Forward Control trucks were produced before the model was discontinued in 1965. 

SPOT IT: 

• Unmistakable flat-nosed design
• Slightly-recessed keystone-shaped grille with round headlights and parking lights
• 81-inch wheelbase, with a turning radius of just 18 feet 
• Flat-sided, faceted rear fenders and side-mounted spare 
• One of the shortest production American trucks ever made, at just 147.5 inches
• Fun fact: the Jeep FC-150 has a factory-installed counterweight under the bed floor so it doesn’t tip over on its nose in a hard stop

Jeep J-seriesProduced: 1963-1987

Given how many years the Jeep J-series pickup was produced, if you see an old Jeep truck on the street, there’s a great chance it’s a J-series. In production for an incredible 24 years, the Jeep J-series was the brand’s ultimate “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” pickup. 

Sold under the model name “Gladiator” until 1971 (yep, that’s where Jeep got the name for the latest Jeep truck) the Jeep J-series borrowed the doors, hood, grille and other interior and exterior components from the Jeep Wagoneer SJ. 

Because of this shared styling, the Jeep J-series would see mostly minor cosmetic upgrades over two and a half decades. Though the grille and interior often changed, most of the exterior sheet metal and many major mechanical components of the Jeep J-series remained pretty much the same.

SPOT IT: 

• Flat-backed cab with either small- or big-window back glass
• Visor-style lip over the front windshield
• Hood and front fenders create a “leaned-forward” angle to the grille 
• Pre-1970 Jeep J-series models have a narrow, tombstone-style grille
• Post-1970 J-series models have full-width front grilles of various designs
• 1979 and later Jeep J-series feature rectangular headlights

Kaiser Jeep M-175
Produced: 1967-1969

The old Jeep truck that went to war, the Jeep M-715 was a 1-1/4 ton truck built by the thousands for service during the Vietnam conflict, where the rugged reliability of the M-715 came in handy when taking on soggy terrain. 

To help keep costs low for Uncle Sam, much of the body for the Jeep M-715 was created from stampings for the civilian Jeep J-series Gladiator, including the cab, doors, fenders and hood.

As such, the M-715 is considered the first U.S. military combat vehicle to be adapted from a civilian design. The “stepside” cargo box, however, was unique to the Jeep M-715, as was the M-715’s convertible cloth top and lay-down windshield frame.  

SPOT IT: 

• Retractable cloth top (usually OD green) with frameless doors
• Hinged windshield that can be laid flat against the hood
• Large, half-round wheel arches with simple metal-strip fender flares
• Spring-loaded hood latches at the left and right side of the hood
• The Jeep M-715 is the truck version of the Jeep Kaiser M-725 Ambulance

Jeep Comanche (MJ)
Produced: 1986-1992

The final Jeep truck produced before the introduction of the Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator JT in 2018, the Jeep Comanche followed Jeep’s tried-and-true formula of adapting their trucks from their successful SUV designs.

First introduced for the 1986 model year, the Jeep Comanche shared its front fenders, hood, grille, doors and many interior components with the then-new Jeep Cherokee XJ sport utility vehicle, which had debuted two years earlier. 

Another odd trait that the Jeep Comanche shared with the Jeep Cherokee: the Cherokee’s “uniframe” design, which skipped the traditional frame found in most trucks in favor of boxed steel rails welded to the underside of the body.

SPOT IT:

• 1986-87 models have 10 slots in the grille, while 1988-92 models have eight slots
• Shares the front doors with the four-door Cherokee, with a black-plastic trim behind the door
• Jeep Comanche “Sport” models have a six-foot bed, while “Comanche Chief” models have a seven-foot bed 
• Rare “Olympic Edition” models commemorate the 1988 Summer Olympics
• Top-of-the-line trim was the 1987-1990 Jeep Comanche Laredo

Most people already have phone chargers in their vehicle and remember to pack snacks, so we’re going to keep it simple and put three items we believe to be most important. The first item we’ve selected is a bit more fun, your favorite CD. Now, we know that everyone uses their phone to listen to music nowadays using Bluetooth, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, but what happens when there’s no phone signal and you didn’t download your playlist before heading out? Maybe listen to silence with your friends on a gorgeous day. Or, pop in an uninterrupted set of jams. Remember, no sleep till Brooklyn!

The second item on our list is fix-a-flat. A can of fix-a-flat is like riding with a superhero. If your tire loses air it can really change the trajectory of the trip, especially if there isn’t a spare in the car. Loss of tire pressure may not even be your fault because winter weather affects tire pressure. All you do is shake the can for 30 seconds, plug the provided hose into your tire air valve and press the button. It’s that easy! It will fill your tire up enough to get to a gas station to air it up the rest of the way to get you another 3 days or 100 miles. It’s an awesome tool to get out of a tough situation.

The third item is a printed map. Again, cell phones lose service and if there isn’t another form of navigation in the car, you could wind up on an undesirable detour. Sounds scary right? Not if you have a physical map. Print one out and get it laminated in case it’s raining so it doesn’t get wet, or grab one at your nearest truck stop or state welcome center. This item will be a huge lifesaver!

The first way is to approach stop lights and stop signs slowly. If the light is red, or the stop sign is coming up, is it really necessary to keep speeding up while you approach your stop? We suggest taking your foot off the gas pedal and coasting your way up when you see the red light or stop sign. This is a double cheat code because it could not only save you gas money, but possible future repair costs as well. 

Next, don’t take off so fast from the stop sign or stoplight. When you hammer down on the gas pedal you’re just dumping gas. Gradually speeding up makes better use of your gas mileage. In the end, the speed limit is the same so why hurry to just to get to the speed limit? The person behind you that accelerated slowly is going to meet you shortly after you’ve stopped accelerating so hard for the 45 mph speed limit sign. 

Third, check the air in your tires. If your tires are low, your vehicle has to do more work to keep them rolling. When the pressure is right, your tires can roll smoothly along and it’s easier to get moving. Think about having to pedal a bicycle with your tires low on air pressure. Or, pushing a wheelbarrow with a low tire. It’s miserable and it takes more work. Besides, It’s almost time to do spring maintenance for your vehicle anyway.

When it comes to the Wrangler and Gladiator, there are tons of small tips and tricks that can be total game changers when you learn about them. We’re talking about Jeep Hacks! We’ve started a blog series all about Jeep Hacks so you can get the most out of your Jeep. Check out our first blog, Jeep Hacks – Volume 1. We can’t wait to share them all with you because the Wrangler is one of our favorites here at McLarty Daniel Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Bentonville, Arkansas.

The first Jeep Hack of Volume 2 can work on the Wrangler or the Gladiator and it sure is “cool.” In the interior of the vehicle, you’ll notice there are two middle air vents. For this hack, you’ll remove the air vent and place a water bottle, or any other beverage you want to keep cold, in the empty slot. Now, crank up your air conditioning and let your drink cool right off. The air will flow across the drink and continuously, keeping it at a low temperature. Save the money on an expensive cooler or a vehicle refrigerator because you already have one!

The second Jeep Hack is specific for the Jeep Gladiator. They may have told you this when you bought your Gladiator but if not, we’re here to help. If you look at the top of your back seats you’ll notice a keyhole. If you unlock this and pull up on the black strap you can now lower your back seats and gain access to extra storage. This is a great feature because the Gladiator is meant to have the roof removed. The only issue is you’re leaving all your items vulnerable to thieves. This hack lets you remove the top and still lock stuff away for those days at the beach or while on a hike.

This award is a big deal because it’s only given to a select number of franchise dealers in the state. We won the 2022 Chrysler Dealer of the Year Award for Arkansas, the 2022 Dodge Dealer of the Year Award for Arkansas, the 2022 Jeep Dealer of the Year Award for Arkansas, the 2022 Ram Dealer of the Year Award for Arkansas and the 2022 Consumer Satisfaction Award. It’s not the first time we have won awards from DealerRater. Each year since 2019, we at McLarty Daniel CDJR have won a Dealer of the Year Award for two or three of the brands we sell new. DealerRater’s Dealer of the Year Award Program recognizes a select number of car dealerships throughout the United States and Canada for outstanding customer satisfaction as expressed through customers’ online reviews posted on DealerRater, an online car dealership review site. The Awards are given to car dealerships that have the highest PowerScore in their category, at the regional, national , and state/provincial levels. Each dealership’s PowerScore is calculated using a Bayesian algorithm that considers the dealership’s average DealerRater star rating as well as the total number of reviews written about the dealership during that calendar year.
